35 kilometers from the russian border, 2600 refugees currently seek shelter in Trostynates, Sumy Oblast. To understand how we can help, we traveled there and met with Yuri Bova (the major of Trostyanets), Alla Horbatenko, and their team.
To deal with the large amount of refugees (internally displayed people, IDP), the city is building a new IDP centre.
Design of the refugee centre
📊 Out of a total population of 26.800 people, 2600 people are refugees. Of those 2600, 60% belongs to vulnerable groups (such as disabled people and children).
🏡The new IDP center can provide high quality shelter for maximum 150 IDPs, that includes local residents who had their houses destroyed, or refugees from the grey zone with russia. Unfortunately, this is only a start.
👨👩👦👦 This center does not only help such refugees, but also makes the city come back to life with additional residents, children playing and going to school. Besides that, it lowers the pressure on current residents who share their homes with refugees, that can now go to the new center.
❤️🩹 Thanks to the generosity of Riverdale, whom donates all the furniture, we are able support in furnishing the new refugee center in Trostyanets, which is nearing completion.
🚛 As we speak the furniture is on its way to Trostyanets, and will soon be used by refugees to support the start of a new life. Once we receive the pictures and videos, another post will follow.
