The children who arrive at the refugee centres are traumatised after having spent months under fire and in bomb shelters.

At the NGO Patriot at the refugee centre in Zaporizhya, Inna Lukyanova and her friend Svetlana Vasilyuk run an operation that takes care of the first needs of the arriving refugees. This is the first place where the refugees feel safe after having lived for many months in frontline conditions. For kids, receiving a colourful chocolate means the first candy they taste in months and provokes priceless smiles on their faces. When the kids receive small colourful toys that they can put together and play with, it stimulates their fine motor skills, which helps with processing trauma. Sending candy and toys to Ukraine is not a luxury, but an important way to help children with taking their first steps in safety.
