Lifeline Ukraine Summer Appeal

Water supply in frontline communities is becoming critically vulnerable due to increasing targeted attacks. While electricity and heating infrastructure were the primary targets during the winter, water systems are now bearing the brunt of attacks in spring and summer.

To reduce dependence on centralized drinking water systems, Lifeline Ukraine has launched a €500,000 Summerization Campaign aimed at securing independent water supply for frontline hospitals, schools and communities. The campaign supports solar power and battery systems for water pumps, renovation and reinforcement of local boreholes, water towers and supply networks, and small-scale water filtration units where needed.

€175,000 has already been secured. €325,000 is urgently needed to complete the campaign.

Damaged water infrastructure in Trostyanets, Sumy Oblast. 3,845 residents are without a functioning communal water supply system. As part of our Summerization campaign, we will replace the existing water tower with an improved solar-powered version that can operate independently from the electricity grid.

What your donation makes possible

Vilno-Zaporizka Community Water Resilience project, Mykolaiv region (in progress)

Problem
3,102 residents depend on a single decentralized water point, vulnerable to ageing infrastructure and power outages.

Solution
A 25 m³ water tower, solar-powered energy system with battery storage, and 70 metres of rehabilitated pipeline.

Impact
Reliable and autonomous access to drinking water for over 3,100 people, including elderly residents, people with disabilities, IDPs and children.

Kharkiv City Clinical Hospital No. 25

Problem
The maternity department supports around 50 births per month and up to 90 mothers, newborns and staff daily. They have access to water from an independent borehole; however, they depend on the electricity grid to operate the system.

Solution
A 13kW solar energy system with battery storage and a water purification unit.

Impact
Reliable water for childbirth, neonatal care, surgical procedures, hygiene and infection prevention during power outages.

Mykolaiv residential buildings

Problem
Water pressure in 56 apartment buildings depends on electric booster pumps. During outages, nearly 11,923 residents risk losing water supply.

Solution
UPS systems with battery storage to keep pumps running.

Impact
Continuous pump operation and uninterrupted access to water during electricity disruptions.

A replicable solution for other communities

Each problem requires a specific solution. However, in Ukraine we see many communities facing similar challenges. Rehabilitating a small water supply system by installing an improved water tower, powered by solar panels, inverters and a small battery system, can make communities independent from an unreliable electricity grid. This is a solution that can be replicated in many other locations. With this replicable model, and with your support, Lifeline Ukraine plans to help:

  • 3,000 residents of Bucha, Kyiv Oblast
  • 2,000 people in Malynivka Hromada, Kharkiv Oblast
  • 1,500 people in Novyi Buh, Mykolaiv Oblast

Your donation helps keep water systems running for communities, hospitals and children’s facilities when the electricity grid goes down..

Why Lifeline Ukraine

Lifeline Ukraine works directly with local partners in areas where regular aid organisations often cannot operate. Projects are selected for urgency, feasibility and direct impact on essential services such as water, healthcare and energy resilience.
